Tails is not available in App Store and never will be – its rules deny an app like Tails point-blank. Instead, the suggested installation method is to “sideload” the app via AltStore Classic. No jailbreak required!

Release Notes

Version 3.0 was released on 2025-07-19. View version history for older releases.

This update is mostly "under the hood", just modernizing some of the code and laying groundwork for future features with saved searches. Still, these are the new bug fixes and features in this version:

– WebM videos can be played again
– "Bold font" accessibility option in iOS no longer causes lag
– Adjacent posts can’t be accidentally zoomed in any more to overlap the current post
– App’s settings can be exported and imported back in for backups and sharing settings and saved searches between devices
– Post order is corrected again in some pools
– Title bar no longer stutters when unzooming in a pool
– When viewing favorites, selected sort/interval options apply properly
– Posts lazyloaded in horizontally scrolling detail view now properly use the selected sorting option

This version also includes the features of v2.3 that was never published outside of a beta version:

– Sort order and date range for post thumbnail views are always available from a dropdown menu in the top right corner (the arrows up and down button)
    – "Popular posts" view can now show popular posts by week, month or year in addition to day
    – "Favorited posts" can now be sorted by date they were favorited
    – Default order and date range options have been moved to the settings

– External screen mirroring improvements:
    – WebM videos play properly
    – The mirroring features can now be disabled in the settings so that the device’s screen is mirrored 1:1 to the external display

– New image zooming that should work better for tall images
– Information about the post (ID, sources, resolution, etc.) are displayed underneath its tags
– Adds an option to autoplay .gif animations in posts’ thumbnails
– Fixes a "There were no posts to show" error for users in time zones that are behind UTC

Pool View: Displays posts as a continuous, vertical list instead of the side-by-side pages
Zoomable Image: Tap or pinch to zoom the image, and long press to save it to your device
Hiding Navigation Bar: Tap the image with two fingers for a fullscreen view
Tag Navigation: Tap any tag to quickly search for it
Tag Subscriptions: Long press on any tag to favorite/subscribe it

Drag-and-Drop

Tails supports iPadOS's Drag-and-Drop system with multiple items, and multitasking with Split Screen and Slide Over.

It works great with 3rd party apps that also support Drag-and-Drop, and for saving multiple images to your device or any cloud service in your Files app by dragging them over.

(Alternatively, save single images to your device by long pressing on them, for example on devices without drag-and-drop support.)

Expanded Layout

On iPad, a lot more thumbnails are shown per screen, with even more thumbnails available as an optional layout enabled in the app's settings.
